Doris J. (Shakingbush) Steely

September 13, 1934 — February 21, 2022

Funeral Service for Doris J. (Shakingbush) Steely, 87 of Short, Oklahoma will be at 2:00 PM on Monday, February 28, 2022 at Short Baptist Church in Short, Oklahoma. Burial will follow at Akins Cemetery in Sallisaw, Oklahoma under the direction of Agent Mallory Martin Funeral Service, Inc.

She was born on September 13, 1934 in Short, Oklahoma to Ruby (Carter) Shakingbush and William Shakingbush and passed away on February 21, 2022 in Fort Smith, Arkansas. She was married to J.W. Steely. She was a homemaker and a member of Short Baptist Church.

Because she was so special to this family and those who met her, we want to share her legacy with you. We want to share just how amazing this woman was. Doris Steely first and foremost served her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Doris lived right under the hill from the little church up on the hill called Short Baptist Church. Not only did she attend and love this church so dearly, she also raised all nine of her children in this church. She would walk her kids from her house to church every chance she could to make sure they were raised in the House of God. As her own children had kids, she also raised them in that same church. Short Baptist Church would frequently have two pews full of the Steely clan. She read her Bible and did a devotional every single day. If Doris couldn’t physically attend church, she would turn the tv to Jimmy Swaggart to be able to worship the Lord. She was a devoted follower of Jesus.
What came second in her life was her family. Her family loved and adored her more than anything in this world and she felt the same about every single one of them. Not only did she have biological family, she also had many family members within the community. In-laws were never referred to as such, they were her children. She treated everyone as if they were her own kids and made sure that everyone was taken care of before herself. She was the type to make you eat all the food on your plate so she knew you wouldn’t go hungry. If you needed money, she would give you her last penny. Doris would travel from the east to the west to support her children and grandchildren in all sporting events they were involved. She was the best supporter that anyone could ever ask for. She would cheer you on no matter what.
Doris was very passionate about sewing and making things with love from her own hands. So many people have numerous quilts, stockings, and other hand sewn items. She may have sent it to you with a needle she forgot about, but that’s the price you would pay for a one-of-a-kind Doris Steely creation.
Doris was known as a woman with no filter and would tell you exactly what she thought. She always meant it from the heart, but how feisty that woman was. She could have the whole room laughing as soon as she opened her mouth. There were numerous occasions where family members would have to get on to her for acting up because of how feisty she could be. If a fly was on the back of someone in the pew in front of us, she had a fly swatter ready to go and she would start swinging.
The most important lesson that Doris Steely taught everyone she knew was how to love. She loved unconditionally and made sure that everyone knew she loved them. You would never leave her without a big warm hug and her saying, “I love you.”
