Dr. Bert Nelson Corley

Bert Nelson Corley of Sallisaw, Oklahoma passed away January 27th, 2018 at 81 years of age.

Dr. Corley was born March 6, 1936 to Ray and Mittie Corley.

Dr. Corley was a Sallisaw High School 1954 graduate. He then attended NE Oklahoma University where he received Bachelor of Science degree. In 1962 he graduated from the University of Oklahoma Medical School. He then completed one-year internship at United States Public Health Service Hospital of Norfolk, VA and a two-year Family Practice Residency at USPHS Hospital in Norfolk, VA. Dr. Corley served one year as Chief of the out-patient clinic and emergency room at USPHS hospital in New Orleans, LA. In July of 1966, he started private practice of Family Medicine in Sallisaw, OK.

Dr. Corley enjoyed taking care of people and was truly concerned for their welfare. In his early years as a physician he delivered babies and performed surgery at Sequoyah Memorial Hospital. He was dedicated to the healthcare services of the community and Sequoyah Memorial Hospital. He was the attending physician and medical director for Sequoyah House Inc. Nursing Facilities for many years. His family was a big part of his life. He enjoyed watching them grow, play sports, and perform. He was a big fan of get togethers-watching OU football games with his family.

He was Sequoyah Memorial Hospital Chief of Staff for many years and was on the Sequoyah Memorial Hospital Board from 1973-2008. He also served on the Sequoyah County Health Department Board of Directors and has citations for 20 years of service.

Dr. Corley volunteered as Sequoyah Memorial Hospital’s Hospice Medical Director and was named the 2009 Oklahoma Hospice Physician of the Year.

He was a member of many medical organizations including the Oklahoma State Medical Association, American Medical Association, and the American Academy of Family Physicians, which named him a Fellow. The Fellow designation is awarded to those who continue their education, keeping up with advances in medicine. He served on the University of Oklahoma College of Medicine Admissions Board.

He is survived by one son, Cary Corley and wife, Jean of Raleigh, NC; two daughters, Gina Fiorentine and husband, Tony and Karla Kennedy and husband, Pat of Sallisaw, OK; eight grandchildren, Jessica Corley, Amanda Corley, Kelly Corley, Jared Fiorentine and wife, Melodi, Emily Goldenburg and husband, Will, Randi Kennedy, Russell Kennedy and wife, Kassidy, and Joe Kennedy; two great-grandchildren, Lillian Gray and Bray Kennedy; one sister, Leona Limon; one sister in law, Eldean Corley.

He was preceded in death by parents, Ray and Mittie Corley, and his brother, Dale Corley.

Pallbearers will be his grandchildren, Jared Fiorentine, Russell Kennedy, and Joe Kennedy, his nephew, Steve Corley, along with Will Goldenburg and Lance Gray.

Honorary pallbearers are Jim Lessley, Dr. Donald Floyd, Leonard Wood, Charles Clevenger, Dr. Rick Robbins, John Cripps, John Montgomery, Dr. William Wood, Dr. Jennifer Scoufus, Dr. Chris Orendorff, Dr. Ben Cheek, Dr. Luke Leming, Dr. Bill VanDeLinder, Wava Qualls, Dr. Jim Trudeau and past and present medical staff of Sequoyah Memorial Hospital and Sequoyah House Inc. Nursing Facilities.

The funeral service will be at 2 pm on Thursday, February 1, 2018 at the Immanuel Baptist Church in Sallisaw, Oklahoma. Interment will follow at Sallisaw City Cemetery under the direction of Agent Mallory Martin Funeral Home in Sallisaw.

Viewing is Tuesday from noon – 8 pm and Wednesday from 10 am – 8 pm at Agent Mallory Martin Funeral Home in Sallisaw

Visitation with the family of Dr. Bert Corley will be from 6 to 8 pm Wednesday at Agent & Mallory-Martin Funeral Home in Sallisaw, Oklahoma.

Memorial contributions may be made to Sequoyah Memorial Home Care & Hospice 213 E. Redwood Sallisaw, Oklahoma 74955.
