James Virgil Farmer

Funeral service for James Virgil Farmer, 88 of Sallisaw, Oklahoma will be at 10:00 AM on Wednesday, November 27, 2019 at Eastside Baptist Church in Sallisaw, Oklahoma. Burial will follow at Sallisaw City Cemetery in Sallisaw, Oklahoma under the direction of Agent Mallory Martin Funeral Service, Inc.

He was born on October 22, 1931 in Hanson community, Oklahoma to Sallie Mae (Wofford) Farmer and Leo Walter Farmer and passed away on November 24, 2019 in Sallisaw, Oklahoma. He was married to Mary (Ross) Farmer on December 25, 1952 in Sallisaw, Oklahoma. She preceded him in death on April 23, 2009. Mr. Farmer retired as Staff Sergeant after 22 years in the U.S. Army Reserve, he was the owner and operator of Farmers Furniture in Sallisaw, OK from 1957 until it closed in 2010 and owned a grocery store with his brother, Grady in the early 1950’s. He was a member of Sallisaw Fire Department from 1959 – 1979, where he served as Chief during his tenure, and a member of Eastside Baptist Church

Survivors are:

3 sons: James Leo Farmer and Shiree of Sallisaw, OK, Stephen Farmer and Janet of Sallisaw, OK and Barry Farmer and Nichole of Sallisaw, OK;

10 grandchildren: James B. Farmer, John R. Farmer, Dessie Farmer, Jennifer Nicole Farmer, Kimberly Dawn Farmer, Joseph Wesley Farmer, Derek Wayne Farmer, Braden Nicholas Farmer, Matthew James Farmer and Jake Ashton Farmer;

2 great grandchildren: Zayne Leo Farmer and Jaylea Farmer;

an honorary son: Dewayne Burgess of Sallisaw, OK;

numerous other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his wife, 1 son: Dr. Michael Wayne Farmer, his parents and 2 brothers: Leo Walter Farmer, Jr. and Grady Leon Farmer.

Active pallbearers will be Members of Sallisaw Fire Department.

Honorary pallbearers will be Jack Wofford, Stanley Collins, Carl Davis and The Maverick Class of Eastside Baptist Church.

Viewing will be 10 am – 8 pm Tuesday at Agent Mallory Martin Funeral Home in Sallisaw where the family will greet 6 – 8 pm.
