Johnny T. Cooper, 94, of Sallisaw, Oklahoma, formerly of Poteau, passed away on December 5, 2024. He was born on February 13, 1930, to Stella and Nelson Cooper, and grew up in Wister, Oklahoma. After graduating from high school in 1948, Johnny honorably served as a medic in the U.S. Army.
Following his military service, he dedicated two decades to the Retail Clerks Organization in California. Upon returning to Poteau, he continued working for another 18 years until his retirement. Known for his strong work ethic, Johnny remained active in his community, taking pride in caring for his home and being involved with Southside Baptist Church, where he was a longtime member. He also contributed to the disaster crew, always ready to support those in need.
Johnny was cherished by many and well-known around Poteau, where he formed lasting friendships. His kindness and willingness to help others greatly impacted those who knew him.
He is survived by his loving wife, Janet; his daughter, Linda Wellmerling of Arizona; step-daughters, Denise Carshall of Poteau and Pamela Kemper of Tennessee; step-sons, Bill Blakeslee of California and Garrett Gilkerson of Sallisaw; nine grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, four great-great-grandchildren, and a host of other relatives and friends.
Johnny was preceded in death by his parents, his older brother Harold "Smokey," and his younger brother Joe.
A memorial service honoring his life will be held at 1:00 PM on Saturday, December 21, 2024, at Southside Baptist Church in Poteau, under the direction of Agent Mallory Martin Funeral Service, Inc.
