Lavone (Dillard) Poindexter

Funeral Service for Lavone (Dillard) Poindexter, 89, of Siloam Springs, Arkansas will be at 10:00 AM on Saturday, July 1, 2023 at Agent Mallory Martin Chapel in Sallisaw, Oklahoma. Burial will follow at Brushy Cemetery in Sallisaw, Oklahoma under the direction of Agent Mallory Martin Funeral Service, Inc.

Lavone Dillard was born in Spiro, Oklahoma on January 15th, 1934. She departed this life on June 25th, 2023 at Northwest Medical Center in Bentonville, Arkansas, peacefully and surrounded by loved ones. She was 89 years old. Lavone was born to Edna Gladys “Eddie” Martin. She had 3 brothers and 6 sisters.

Lavone met the love of her life, Gerald Poindexter, in Sallisaw, Oklahoma. A cousin introduced the two and Lavone had jokingly told the cousin to tell Gerald that she had red hair, freckles and crooked teeth, but when Gerald seen her he always said that she was the prettiest girl he had ever seen. They were married on July 7, 1951 and had been together 53 years at the time of Gerald’s passing.

Lavone and Gerald had 4 sons, Terry, Jimmy, Rick, and Tracy, a daughter, Lana and several grandchildren. She was loving mother and grandmother and after raising her own children she went on to raise a couple of her grandchildren as well.

Lavone had a few different jobs throughout the years but she is probably most remembered for working at Rocky Point Grocery, the convenience store she and Gerald owned. She could be spotted there most days with her fresh permanent and a Pall Mall cigarette. I’m sure you’ve had one of her bologna sandwiches if you lived in the area.

Lavone was preceded in death by her mother, Edna Martin, husband, Gerald Poindexter, 2 sisters, Mary Drain and Ruby Martin, 3 brothers, Charley Martin, James Martin and Orville Allen, and 1 son, Ricky D. Poindexter.

She is survived by 4 sisters, Darlene Kaufelt of Watts, OK, Laveta McCalister of Rogers, AR, Georgie McGarrah of Tonitown, AR and Josie Mounce of Siloam Springs, AR, 2 brothers, Leroy Martin of Garfield, AR and Jimmy Martin of Tahlequah, OK, 1 daughter, Lana Sells of Siloam Springs, AR, 3 sons, Terry Poindexter and Denise of Rock Island, OK, Jim Poindexter and Crystal of Shady Point, OK and Tracy Poindexter and Tara of Broken Arrow, OK, 10 grandchildren, Codey, Sarah, Chance, Andrew, Hannah, Haley, Leslie, Christopher, Jade and Bronson, seven great-grandchildren and several other relatives and friends.

Viewing will be 10 AM – 8 PM Friday at Agent Mallory Martin Funeral Home in Sallisaw, OK.
