Mary Kay Elwick

January 18, 1945 — November 17, 2024

Sallisaw, Oklahoma

Mary Kay (Shepard) Elwick, aged 79, of Sallisaw, Oklahoma, passed away on November 17 2024, in Fort Smith, Arkansas. Cremation arrangements are entrusted to the care of Agent Mallory Martin Funeral Service, Inc.

Born on January 18, 1945, in San Antonio, Texas, Mary was the cherished daughter of Ellen (Mulherin) and Arthur Dee Shepard. Her formative years were spent in Denver, culminating in her graduation from the University of North Colorado in 1966. This milestone was merely the beginning of a life devoted to education and nurturing young minds.

On June 15, 1969, in Greely, Colorado, she wed the love of her life, Don Elwick. Together, they created a warm and loving home in Sallisaw, where they settled in 1976. Over her 25-year career, Mary dedicated herself to teaching in elementary schools, sharing her passion for knowledge with countless students. She furthered her expertise by earning a Master's Degree in Education from Northeastern State University in 1983, which paved the way for a rewarding tenure as an elementary principal for seven years.

Beyond her professional achievements, Mary found joy in the simple pleasures of life. Her love for travel, gardening, arts and crafts, and most importantly, family, defined her purpose. Fondly remembered by her grandchildren as "Gaga," she enriched their lives with laughter, wisdom, and an abundance of love.

Mary is survived by her beloved husband, Don, with whom she shared a lifelong partnership; her son, Don D. Elwick and his wife Megan of Weatherford, Oklahoma; her daughter, Stephanie Mollet and her husband Matt of Dallas, Texas; and her treasured nine grandchildren: Kara, Avery, McKinley, Addison, Morgan, Kaiser, Sutton, Madeleine, and Harper. She is also survived by her sister, Elaine Shepard of Sallisaw, Oklahoma, along with numerous other relatives and friends who will greatly miss her.

Mary was preceded in death by her parents and one granddaughter, Kylee.

In remembering Mary Kay Elwick, we celebrate a life richly lived, a devoted educator, a loving family member, and a true friend whose spirit continues to inspire us all.
