Peggy Corrine (Wallingsford) Smith

July 23, 1934 — November 26, 2023

Funeral Service for Peggy Corrine (Wallingsford) Smith, 89, formerly of Sallisaw, Oklahoma will be at 10:00 AM on Wednesday, November 29, 2023 at Agent Mallory Martin Chapel in Sallisaw, Oklahoma. Burial will follow at Akins Cemetery in Sallisaw, Oklahoma under the direction of Agent Mallory Martin Funeral Service, Inc.

Peggy Corrine was born July 23, 1934 in Clinton, Oklahoma to Hubert and Nettie Fletcher Wallingsford, the third of five girls to be born to this couple. She passed from this life on November 26, 2023 at the age of 89 years. While still a baby she and her family moved to Southern California where she was raised, attended schools in Fullerton, California and was married March 19, 1950 in Buena Park, California to Pete Smith. Some said because of being so young, just 15 and 18 years old, it wouldn’t last but all these years later only death parted them. He preceded her in death on November 19, 2023. Peggy enjoyed reading, crossword puzzles, knitting, crocheting, and made some beautiful pictures in counted cross stitch but her most recent love was piecing quilts as gifts for family and friends.

Peggy went by her middle name of Corrine until she went to work, then chose to go by her first name, but would answer to either. She worked as a grocery checker for Alpha Beta Markets for 16 years. In 1979, with four children now, the family moved from Southern California to Sallisaw, Oklahoma where Pete went to work for Colt Industries and Peggy was hired as teller at Armstrong Bank in Vian. While working at the drive through window she was awestruck at seeing snowfall for the very first time.

With a home visit by Pastor Robert and Patricia Polvado of First Assembly of God came the opportunity to be the church office secretary, where Peggy worked for 20 years until illness brought about retirement. In 2013 Pete and Peggy moved into Butterfield Senior Living Residence in Fort Smith, Arkansas which was only a mile from the home of the younger daughter Paula and her husband Todd. After living at Butterfield five years, Todd had floor plans drawn and an addition was built onto their house so the parents would have the care they now needed and this special couple was willing to provide.

Survivors are two daughters, Peggy Sue Nichols of Van Buren, AR and Paula June Friday and Todd of Fort Smith, AR; two sons, Doug Smith and Karen of Benton, AR and Don Smith of Pennsylvania; nine grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren; two sisters, Helen Maurer of Tigard, OR and Edna Rains of Sallisaw, OK; and other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband; parents; and two sisters, Carrie Ann Mulkey of Texas, and Darlene “Sally” Jencks of Oregon.

Active Pallbearers will be Michael Smith, Brettly Smith, Zachary Smith, Todd Friday and Brian Mattingly.

Viewing will be 1 – 8 PM Tuesday at Agent Mallory Martin Funeral Home in Sallisaw, OK.
